Workshop Abstracts

The DC Motor
Ed Lee, Education Program Manager, American Physical Society

Participants will disassemble a dc motor, mount the rotor, get it spinning with a magnet, and then perform experiments to investigate the physics of how the motor works. Each participant will receive a motor and related materials.

The Physics of Baseball
Porter Johnson, Professor of Physics, Illinois Institute of Technology

Baseball, our national game, is explored from the viewpoint of the basic physical principles involved. Questions such as why lighter bats are in vogue, why Denver, Colorado, is a home run mecca, and why pitching seems to be stronger in the World Series are considered from the viewpoint of physics. In addition, the impact of advances in technology on baseball is examined. Several hands-on exercises will be used for illustration.
