Date July 11, 2000 Attendees J. Galambos, S. Kim, Marc Doleans, SY Lee, J. Holmes, J. Wei The group discussed the EPAC meeting. There was a lower than average overall attendance, but SNS was well represented. In particluar over 20 papers on the ring were presented. The fring field scaling paper was especially well recieved. Useful individual discussions were held with SLS personel regarding application programming and possible collaboration. Also discussions on MAD9 were held. While the program looks quite well done and potentially useful, its support from CERN management seems lacking, which casts doubts on its future. SNS is the only high intensity proton machine actually being built, other high intensity source projects are only in the conceptual stage. Jie discussed upcomming personnel additions to the group. Weishi will be ariving soon and will work on magnet related topics (fring field etc.). We are still trying to get Paul Chu on board. Also a new student from Italy (from Prof. Vacaro) will start at BNL soon, and will concentrate on impedeance problems. Sang ho reviwed the HOM work. The modes are calculated for the reference beta = 0.61 case and the beta = 0.81 case. The dipole, quad and sextupole indexs have been characheterized with a scaling for radial position (suitable for use in a HOM beam breakup analysis). He also tried using ANSYS for a high frequency coupler study, but is encountering some dificulties with ANSYS. Marc is claculating the Q_ext for thre cavities with the coupler. Intital results look like the iris is large enough to geive an adequate Q_ext value. Jie. Wei mentioned that the BNL ring corrector scheme is being finalized. SY Lee discussed the use of the Indiana cooler ring to do space charge studies. He proposed adding a faster injection bump magnet to facilitate painting and to add a chopper to make RF capture for extraxtion faster. He suggested that the setup should be OK for space charge studies, and that the beam is not intercepted by the septum on extraction. He showed measued gaussian beam shapes after extraction indicating that scraping did not occur.
