Minutes SNS Accelerator Physics Group Mtg. 2/27/02 Present: J. Galambos, S. Henderson, S. Cousineau, E. Tanke, S. Aleksandrov, D. Jeon, S. Kim, M. Doleans, P. Chu, A. Shishlo, J. Stovall, T. Pelaia, E. Tanke, J. Holems, . Fultz, J. Stovall, L. Kravchuk J. Galambos led a safety meeting. He began by stating his and lab management's commitment to safety. The Madia safety video was then viewed and discussed (see below). The upcoming site tour on 3/8/02 was discussed. Group Safety Meeting: The SNS Accelerator Physics group safety briefing was held March 7, 2002. All permanent staff, visiting staff and students associated with Accelerator Physics were present (A. Aleksandrov, S. Cousineau, C. Chu, V. Danilov, M. Doleans, M. Fultz, J. Galambos, S. Henderson, J. Holmes, D. Jeon, S. Kim, L. Kravchuk, T. Pelaia, A. Shishlo, J. Stovall, E. Tanke) The Madia safety video was watched, and subsequently discussed. The primary area of discussion was related to commissioning activities that will commence soon. We also noted that we are presently, and will be more often, traveling to and from the SNS site along Bethel Valley Rd., and need to be attentive even before getting to the site. Several members of the group personally attested to recent incidents of brief inattention, taking of shortcuts in their outside lives, that could have led to accidents. In order to better understand and control hazards that we are likely to encounter, we will plan and write JHAs. Potentially dangerous activities that we will be involved in during installation and commissioning of the SNS beam include RF conditioning and checking of magnet polarities. JHA reports will be created for these activities. In writing these JHA reports, a review of standard practices for similar activities at other accelerator labs will be done. Although our group is fully staffed to the present plan, we are expecting visitors and collaborators during commissioning activities. All collaborators performing similar work as Accelerator Physics will be given the pertinent JHA reports and safety training modules to review. To facilitate this, we will create a web page with links these documents and appropriate training web pages. One action item we came up with, was to post notices in our building (701SCA), warning of the uneven step sizes in some stairwells. I am fully committed to the safety issues. I especially do not want to see any harm come to anyone working in or with the accelerator physics group, and aim to continuously communicate this to the group.
